Flags  Introduction

Introduction
On this page we will quickly explore the different sub-sections that compose the "Flags" area of this website.

Flags play a central role in the identification process of people, and it has been so throughout history. The symbolism and colourful diversity of flags that have existed in the past, and that exist now, offer an interesting array of themes that people can relate to. It is while respecting this context, and the importance that many legitimately attach to their flag, that we invite you on a journey of the imagination.

This section of Annexation.ca is all about the North American Flags of Canada and the United States of America, and the amazing variety of communities that compose both countries. Below are some basic pointers that can help you make the best of your visit here.

Enjoy your visit through this virtual museum of ideas!

Why is this area divided into multiple sections?

This section had to be divided into multiple pages because of the sheer amount of data they contain. In fact much of the information presented here is condensed into large single pages purposefully, to facilitate easy viewing and to make it simple and enjoyable to compare the different designs.

What are these sections about?

National Flags The National Flags page provides statistics on the two countries that are concerned here: Canada and the United States of America. Aside from comparing flags, this page should help you get a quick understanding of the relative strengths of each country.

Regional Flags
The Regional Flags page provides information and flag designs for ALL American states, ALL Canadian provinces, as well as ALL Canadian & American territories. From my research, such an easily accessible compilation does not exist anywhere else on the internet.

Community Flags
The Community Flags page brings this exploration to an all new level, by compiling all the Municipal flags of the numerous communities that populate this vast land called North America. This page is especially interesting because most people never really had the opportunity to find out the familiar symbolism and enthusiastic mottos that North American communities adopt. This is the widest compilation of North American city flags you will ever find, all available in one sleek page, for your browsing enjoyment.

Experimental Flags
The Experimental Flags page is all about the flags that could be, that have been submitted by creative citizens. They are not meant to offend, but simply intended as an exploration of the moving future, through new symbolic arrangements that are interesting, entertaining and worthwhile to consider.

What's up with the National Flags page?

Notice one thing; The former motto of the USA was "From Many, One". These national mottos could easily have applied for the other country just as well. Food for thought!

What about the Regional Flags?

Those flags are both colourful and enjoyable to discover. Whether you become inspired by the imaginative mottos that were devised, or put in touch with the relative size and economy of each region, I am confident that you will take something positive out of this experience.

What about the Community Flags?

There is an incredible amount of communities in North America. As you browse through this page, you may notice that some of the biggest and best known metropolitan areas are missing from the list. This is due to the fact that those cities don't have a high quality version of their flag available on the internet! I want to make this experience a quality one, and only high quality images will be integrated on those pages.

I notice that some community flags are missing, what can I do to help rectify this?

First, thank you for locating some missing flags. This list is a work in progress, and I will gladly accumulate data as new flags are discovered. If you feel that your city should be represented but can't find any good image of your city's flag on the internet, write to your municipal council! Demand they provide us with a high quality version! I will be sure to include it, as well as the city information that goes with it.

In order for me to integrate new flags on this website, follow this simple procedure:

1. Find a good quality image of the Flag.
2. Make sure it the width is at least 320 pixels.
3. Send me an email at americalex@annexation.ca
4. Mention in the subject "Community Flag Submission"
5. If you have pertinent information on the community in question, make sure to include it in the email.

I am considering creating a Native American Flag area. This is an expansion of this project that I hope will materialize as Annexation.ca steams forward. Contributions will be essential for the success of this ambitious expansion to the flags section. I am thankful for your help!

Lastly, do not be concerned by the size of the community you submit. Perhaps you come from a small community, and feel intimidated by the idea of submitted your flag to us, because of the sheer scope of getting a spot in the light alongside the biggest and greatest communities on this continent. Don't let this stop you! If your community cares enough to design it's own flag, it fully deserves representation here, and I will be honoured and enthusiastic to add it to this website.

Can I contribute my own flag designs?

You bet! But I will only accept designs that are related to the topic of Canada and/or the USA and their constituents. Perhaps if your design is relevant and serious an exception can be made, but keep in mind that not all experimental flags that are submitted will end up being displayed on the website. I will be the final judge as to those that correspond to the quality standards I am looking for.

A good image quality is a great start, and a good utilization of symbols is a good way to get listed. In any event, I am not a very difficult person, so don't feel scared from submitting, I will accept that vast majority of those who make the effort of sharing their creative work with me. Simply follow this guideline when submitting your work:

1. Provide a good quality image of the flag.
2. Provide a name for the flag, that describes it's role and function in a nutshell.
3. Provide a brief description about the logic on which this design is built, and the signification you attach to it.
4. Provide your name (or pseudonym) as well as you location, and a contact email if you want to be reachable by onlookers who view your design.
5. All that information will be included next to your flag design.

As for the submission procedure itself:

1. Make sure it the width is at least 320 pixels.
2. Send me an email at americalex@annexation.ca
3. Mention in the subject "Experimental Flag Submission"
