Do not be deceived by temporary chills: Aside from the regional traits
that differentiate us, Canadians and Americans share a closeness and
compatibility that few other nations can understand. If you ever doubt that
daring assertion, take the test, and plan your next trip in the other's country.
By meeting people up front, the false stereotypes that develop over time
dissolve as they are confronted with reality. This is why we
also need to keep in mind the limited use statistics play in defining our
understanding of this unique relationship.
Statistics are certainly a useful tool: they give us the people's pulse at a specific
moment in time. But statistics also have their limits, and informed citizens of
both our countries fully grasp and understand the strong bounds of friendship and
mutual respect that continue to define the prosperous co-existence of our
peoples.
Our relationship is persistent because our peoples interact together
more than with anyone else. The result of this communication is a
free-flowing cultural exchange that harmonizes our attitudes and brings
us ever closer; Our close cultural relationship is possible because our
countries share the largest and strongest trade relationship the world
has ever seen.

A Study
of How Canadians perceive Canada US Relations |
|
The
interesting thing to note about this survey is that is was taken in
August 2001, just before the events of 9/11. In a sense, this is perhaps
the only surviving snapshot of pre-911 mentalities in the context of
Canada-US relations. |

Values & Identities
in North America |

Although
very interesting, this survey was done while including perceptions and
opinions of Mexicans. I want to reaffirm the commitment to a bilateral
discussion between Canadians and Americans only. Annexation.ca does not
support an integration of Mexico, and opposes
the creation of an undemocratic North American Union that would supplant
the national sovereignty of it's member countries. |

Broadcasting, Canada US Relations &
Canadian Public Opinion |

Although
only a part of this report is relevant to the topic at hand, it was
included here anyway. It is of limited value, yet I deemed it useful
considering the surprisingly small overall amount of research that has gone into
understanding Canadian-American relations. |

Canada US Relations |
|
This is a
good report, similar to the one produced in 2001. Notice the steep
decrease in support for an annexation on both sides of the border. This
is very likely due to the timing of the survey, which happened during
the coldest chill of Canadian-American relations in recent memory,
largely due to the divide created by the Iraq war. |

Canada
US Relations and the Emergence of Cross Border Regions |
|
The most
recent research was conducted by the Canadian government itself. To
resume the situation, ever-increasing ties between Canadians and
Americans have spilled across the political borders and provide new
challenges for the Canadian government when setting national policy. |
